Gum recession can occur as a result of periodontal disease or aggressive teeth brushing, and must be treated by a dental professional. Depending on your condition, Dr. Gustavo Ruiz may recommend a free gingival graft (FGG) to prevent further recession.

Free gingival (gum) tissue is the part of the gingiva that surrounds the teeth but is not directly attached to the teeth. It is grafted in order to increase the amount of keratinized tissue, a tissue that helps maintain and facilitate dental hygiene around a tooth or dental implant.

During a free gingival graft, a section of soft tissue is completely detached from the grafted donor site, usually a small portion of the surface of the roof of the mouth, and transferred to the area that has been affected by gum recession the recipient site. The grafted site does not maintain a connection with the donor site. Free gingival grafts are often performed to treat gum tissue that would otherwise continue to recess, and are not intended for tooth roots that are already exposed.
